WEEK 1

Environment Project

Following my research from the winter break, I focused on supermarkets and shops. I chose to look at supermarkets as this is currently the only place open for use in the UK, this was an interesting concept to me and I also knew it would be accessible for me to gather imagery. I first gathered primary research by going into shops and taking pictures of the shelfs and aisles, I found this hard to work with as the colours and patterns were very similar in each picture. I then started taking pictures of the outside of old and run down shops, as well as the back of the shops where delivery lorries were. I liked this research a lot more and will continue to work this way.

 Drawing & Visualisation

This project was to link in with the environments project, so I was photographing shops in the style of four photographers who inspired me. I chose to look at Chloe Dewe Matthews as she features urban shops fronts in a range of her photographs, her photos look unedited. I also looked at Christina de Middle, her photographs look dark and moody but also show pops of colour and her compositions are interesting. Sohrab Hura's photography was very interesting to me as uses motion and close ups in her photos, she also edits them back and white with lots of grain and contrast.

WEEK 2

Uniform Project

This week I started with combining my research together, I did this through collage work and drawings. I focused telling a story through my research, taking a trip to the shops. I thought about the transport I take, the clothes I wear and how this is effected with lockdown. I documented this in my pictures, thinking about the composition, patterns and textures. This week was the start of student-led lectures, I found this a really hard way to work as I feel I don't have much feedback to take forward into next week.

Drawing & Visualisation

I continued with the photography project from the last week. The final photographer I looked at was Olivia Arthur, her photos look soft with pastel colours, the composition in her photos are interesting and show her perspective. I found this project helpful towards my environments project and also really enjoyed taking and editing interesting pictures.

WEEK 3

Uniform Project

I started this week by looking at Lacoste, Balenciaga and Joseph Spring who have designed loungewear garments. This helped me think about what style, colours and textures I could use  in my collection. I dyed a range of fabrics with different weights textures, surfaces in a light brown colour and really liked how these turned out. I thought that the fabrics with a grainy texture worked well and plan to use these in my samples. I also did some hand knitting and plan to also use this in my work. From the workshop task, I learnt how to make repeat patterns in Photoshop, I experimented with this and designed some really interesting patterns. I then combined the pattens onto the fabric that I dyed and knit to see how my samples could look.

Drawing & Visualisation

This week we were to make an artwork inspired by our environments project research. I struggled to understand the brief clearly so I experimented with collage and painting in the style of the artists we were given. I will work on this in the following week and incorporate photoshop into some of the artworks as I find this a particularly good way for me to work.

WEEK 4

Uniform Project

Following last week, I continued to make samples inspired by my research. I lino printed onto fabric, knit and paper, I think this worked well to achieve repeat patterns. I also rust dyed some of my fabric and loved how these turned out. I embroidery stitched and bleached into these samples too, this made them more interesting. For my fashion illustrations, I drew out my designs on Photoshop and then used my repeat patterns from last week to fill in the garment fabric. I hadn't worked in that way before and I think they turned out professional and stylish. I also tried to make my technical flats more professional and I think I achieved this.

Drawing & Visualisation

This week I was a lot more creative with this project and related it back to the work I was doing for the Environments project. I weaved with wool and newspaper inspired by a photo I had taken of a moving bus. This then inspired my paintings and collages and made my work more thought through. I also used Illustratior and Photoshop as I am really enjoying working this way.

WEEK 5

Uniform Project

At the beginning of this week, I worked on my proposal for the self directed project we were about to start. I found this a good way to plan out my project as it is the first project I have self directed. I completed my synopsis for the environments project and found this challenging yet I am pleased with how it tells the story of my project. We then had our Pecha Kucha Presentation at the end of the week to show what we will be doing for the self directed project. I have chosen to look at the theme of dyslexia as this is something I struggle with and want to explore within my creative work. I feel this presentation went well and I am excited to start the new project.

Drawing & Visualisation

This week we were to create repeat prints inspired by our environments Project. I looked at artists such as Eddie Peake, Andy Warhol and Bridget Reilly for inspiration. I used Photoshop, Illustratior and paper based work for this as I found it easier to create repeats.

WEEK 6

Self Directed Project

This week we had our mid-way review, I found that my feedback was good. I learnt that my presentation skills work a lot better working with powerpoint rather than Padlet, therefore, I have decided to return to using Powerpoint for presenting my work. I started to gather research for my Dyslexia project and mainly looked at colour overlays, brain scans and words for this. I struggled to find primary research so had to think outside the box for photographs I could take, to use within my project. I also looked at designers that used layers and lettering within their work, Viktor & Rolf, Mark Jacobs and John Galliano were some that stood out to me.

Drawing & Visualisation

Feedback from my mid-way review was good and I was told to now start relating my D&V work to my new self directed project. The new project was to look at layering up, I did this by painting onto plastic sheets and layering them on top of each other to create new shapes and designs, I also used string and stitching on top of that.

WEEK 7

Self Directed Project

This week I started to do drawings from my research and also drawings of how i see dyslexia in my own way. I took these drawings into Photoshop and worked with them in a way that would make them good textile designs. I was thinking a lot about layering and trying to portray this within my designs. I then started to work with fabric using embroidery and slashing layers, taking inspiration from my research.

Drawing & Visualisation

Following the previous week, I took some of the designs I had onto Photoshop and layered them. I brought in images of famous people who have dyslexia and used these within my work too. I experimented with deigns and repeat patterns. I then used my deigns within fashion illustrations to show how they would be used within a garment.

WEEK 8

Self Directed Project

This week I worked on designs through a combination of paper based work and digital work. I wanted to have my ideas clear before starting my fabric samples. I then also investigated the fabric properties which I wanted to use within my garment and samples and decided on organza and net fabrics as these were sheer and easy to layer, therefore, I ordered these so that I could start my samples as soon as possible. I also looked at other designers who used lots lot layers within their work and started to illustrate fashion ideas for my own garment. I feel this has prepared me for starting my samples next week.

Drawing & Visualisation

This weeks project was looking at make do and mend of garments. I found this an interesting concept and looked at designers Celia Pym, Annette Messager, Louise Bourgeois and Lynn Skordal for inspiration. I chose to work on a pair of socks as this was a piece of clothing that could no longer be worn. I drew out a design taking inspiration from my dyslexia project research and applied this design through stitch mark making. For next week I will add more stitch work and expend the socks to make a more dramatic style.

WEEK 9

Self Directed Project

This week I felt I needed to gather more contextual research for bring together my design ideas. I started to look at ballet dancers tutu skirts as these have lots of sheer layers, which is something I want to incorporate into my garment. I looked at Yumi Katsura and Viktor & Rolf as I find their use of silhouettes very interesting. I then started putting this inspiration into my samples. I dyed fabrics, used digital print and machine embroidery to achieve the deigns I wanted.

Drawing & Visualisation

This week was the start of the second skin project, I started my research by watching the viedos and researching the artists that we were suggested to look at. The Central St Martins MA Fashion Class of 2020 was most inspiring to me and from here I started to think about what my own concept could be. I decided to take the 'second skin' theme quite literally and chose to make a corset which looked as if skin had been sewn back together, with a centre piece which looking as if you were able to see the models insides.

WEEK 10

Self Directed Project

This week I started to pick out parts of my primary, secondary and contextual research which I liked best for design inspiration. I started to draw these and collage them to make designs, i also took them onto Photoshop to manipulate and develop these further. I then printed the designs onto fabric and used them within my fabric samples. I also dyed fabrics and used machine embroidery to achieve the samples I wanted. I decided that the garment that I would make for this project would be trousers. Therefore, I made my trouser pattern and cut it out using organza fabric, in preparation for construction.

Drawing & Visualisation

Following from last week, I began to make pattern pieces for my corset and used scraps of fabric that i had from other projects to create my design. I used a zig zag stitch to show clearly where the pieces have been sewn together and used gathers and embroidery for details. I am pleased with how my garment for this project turned out. If I had more time and resources, I think the corset could look to a more professional level. I also shot a video and photographs of this garment and think these turned out really well.

WEEK 11

Self Directed Project

This week I created some new samples and tested out new techniques which I was considering taking forward to my final garment. I refined my research and made concept boards. I then took forward my favourite ideas and started to make my trousers. I used digital print, gathering and beading within my final design.

Drawing & Visualisation

This week, we were to make a poster which presents our self directed project in a visual way. I did research into communication posters, posters that I liked, posters that had a link with dyslexia and also creative infographic posters. I chose to use an image of my final garment as I wanted to showcase this the most. I then edited the photo and added the title 'Dyslexic Thinking' along with details of my project. I disoriented the lettering and made it almost complicated to read as this links to dyslexia a lot. I also incorporated layering within the poster as this is a reoccurring theme throughout my project. I am very pleased with how my poster turned out and think it visually communicates my theme well.

WEEK 12

Self Directed Project

From last week, I completed my final garment and was really pleased with how it turned out. I also completed all of my fabric samples, which I believe complement my trousers and show my theme and ideas well. I shot my video and got pictures of my trousers on the body, which turned out really well. I edited these to create the atmosphere which I desired. I finished off any last bits of my project and made sure it was all uploaded and edited to my website. I am pleased with my first self directed project and feel I showcased my theme of dyslexia well.

Drawing & Visualisation

This week we were to do quirky fashion illustrations, I was excited for this project as fashion illustrations are something I feel I need to experiment a lot more with. I took a lot of inspiration from first-year students at the University of Westminster. I liked the idea of having my own handwriting and personal thoughts about dyslexia within my drawings as it makes them a lot more personal and relatable. I also wanted my garments to stand out  the most so I only used colour and detail for the garments. I also wanted to take more time with these illustrations to create something which I was proud of and communicated my theme of dyslexia well, I think I achieved this within my work.
